what is sarabande
the
objective of sarabande -the glenn gould project is to promote music education
through lecture-recitals, masterclasses, public concerts and raise awareness
about the role of music in society. sarabande - the glenn gould project serves
as a performance society, and promotes music education, particularly amongst
young people and adult musicians, and provides musicians with exciting public
performance opportunities and a platform to showcase their diverse musical
talents. concerts also raise funds and awareness about various small charities
that need help, and prove that music can have a greater social benefit, and
make a difference on a larger scale.
more background information
"when I first came to ireland many years ago, I was involved in the “music conservatoire” world here in dublin– particularly with the royal irish academy of music. i found
that despite the fact that music students were spending many hours a day
practising and training to be professional musicians, there were hardly any
opportunities for them to play in front of other people, let alone public
audiences. with the exception of the feis ceoil, and a few other small music
competitions, there was hardly any incentive for musicians to gain performance
experience.as a result, many music graduates were becoming disillusioned when
furthering their education abroad, where suddenly they would be studying with
“seasoned perfomers” and students who had no trouble performing in a variety of
different concert settings. i decided that if I were to be involved in music
education in ireland, the
very first thing I needed to do was to create more informal public performance
opportunities for my students and other young musicians in dublin.
despite the fact
that i have to date, received no funding from organisations like the
arts council, music network ireland, or dublin city council, in 2005, i
developed a series of
lecture-recitals with the sole ambition to do away with the egocentric,
tedious
classical concert experience, and replace it with a more exciting and
engaging
concert experience. i believe that if music is to stand the test of
time, we
need to understand, that it is important to give students, irrespective
of age,
the opportunity to communicate it with an audience, with their friends,
family
and the general public. there are many things wrong with our society,
and the
world we live in, but I do believe that in our immediate circles, there
are
also incredible possibilities, and we all have the potential to make
things
happen, to break down the barriers that exist, and to create in our
youth, the
need to be passionate about music, and make positive changes in our
society."

sarbanade - the glenn gould project also provides a professional public performance platform for
up and coming young
musicians who would benefit from the experience and exposure a public recital
provides. recent recitals included those at the national concert hall, dublin (june 3rd 2008)
featuring nicola mulligan, ruth finlay, david o'shea, tim healy kavanagh and catherine farrell, wexford arts center, goethe auditorium as well as abroad (ottawa international chamber music festival).
mezzo soprano naomi o'connell, who recently obtained a full scholarship
to julliard school in new york was first showcased in a solo evening
concert at "of songs and sonnets" - a history of early vocal music in
january 2008.

your support makes things happen!
sarabande
- the glenn gould project works hard to ensure that administrative costs are
kept as low as possible. this means that your donation has a direct impact on
the artistic work we produce, the public performance opportunities we create
for young musicians and adult/amateur musicians, and bringing even more
concerts to venues such as the national concert hall, and the national gallery
of ireland.

your support brings music to
young people!
with huge cuts in education, young people have very few
opportunities to be exposed to classical music, despite the well-documented
impact of music on creativity and intelligence. sarabande is committed
to exposing young people to classical music.
through informal house concerts, student workshops and
masterclasses which are free to everyone, it is hoped that we can create
excitement and enthusiasm for classical music in young people.
the project also offers young people more public performance
opportunities and concert platforms than any other in Ireland, with concerts during the
academic year, “musicians of the future” and “goethe auditorium” concerts, and
tickets are always kept to a minimum to make the experience worthwhile for performers,
students and audience members alike.

your support gives students the
chance to work with world renowned musicians!
In 2009, sarabande will bring world renowned
pianists and vocalists to dublinto
work with music students, adult and amateur musicians. Tthis is an
opportunity for students to study with legendary performers and
educators,
including EMI recording artist, multiplte BBC proms performer and
senior fellow of music – trinity college london, Head of
keyboard, royal academy of music london, PHILIP FOWKE. these opportunities are normally only reserved for
students studying in music conservatoires, but for the first time, it is
envisaged that non-conservatoire students can gain from working with legendary,
respected and world renowned musicians in their field.

ticket revenue doesn’t cover costs …
many people are under the impression that ticket
revenue covers most of our expenses. In fact, ticket revenue only covers 18% of
our costs.the concerts you enjoy are, at the moment, funded solely by ticket
revenue, which is why your help is needed if sarabande is to continue to put on
even more concerts, masterclasses with world renowned musicians, workshops,
and “musicians of the future” concerts
